Description

White Billy is a premium leucistic variety of that originated from an extraordinary Hillbilly Pumpkin isolate. Although its bright white appearance often leads people to mistake it for a true albino, White Billy is actually leucistic, meaning it has greatly reduced pigmentation while still producing the characteristic dark spores. Its unique coloration, impressive morphology, and documented history have made it one of the standout modern cultivars in the mycology community.

The White Billy story began in Denver, Colorado, where an unusually pale Hillbilly Pumpkin specimen was discovered and cloned. During a consultation at Denver Mycology, James Cruz of Full Canopy Genetics was introduced to the culture and recognized its exceptional potential. After acquiring the isolate, he spent time evaluating and stabilizing the genetic, ultimately transforming the original mutation into the consistent leucistic variety now known as White Billy.

White Billy is admired for its clean, elegant appearance and substantial structure. Mature specimens commonly produce thick ivory to bright white stems, broad creamy-white caps, and dense fruiting bodies with minimal pigmentation throughout. Unlike true albino varieties, however, White Billy continues to produce dark purple-brown spores, confirming its status as a leucistic genetic. As the mushrooms mature or are handled, vivid cobalt-blue bruising develops against the pale tissue, creating a dramatic visual contrast that has become one of the variety’s defining characteristics.

While White Billy maintains many of the physical traits inherited from its Hillbilly Pumpkin parent, it has become especially well known for its exceptional size and robust morphology. Carefully stabilized isolates have demonstrated the ability to produce remarkably large fruiting bodies while preserving the dense structure and attractive proportions that distinguish the lineage. These qualities have helped establish White Billy as one of the premier leucistic selections available today.

Within the mycology community, White Billy has earned widespread recognition for both its documented origin and its refined genetics. The stabilization work performed by James Cruz has transformed a naturally occurring mutation into a dependable modern cultivar that continues to be appreciated by collectors, breeders, and microscopy enthusiasts around the world.
