Description
Casper is a modern designer variety created by Sly Loopsta (Wesley Looper) through a cross of MakShak and Albino Penis Envy (APE). Since its introduction around 2020, Casper has become one of the most recognizable contemporary albino-influenced cultivars, admired for its exceptional morphology, clean coloration, and carefully selected genetics.
The lineage behind Casper combines two distinguished modern varieties. MakShak, itself a hybrid of Melmak and Shakti, contributes its robust structure and refined morphology, while Albino Penis Envy (APE) adds the dense tissue, true albino genetics, and bold physical characteristics that have made the APE lineage one of the most influential in modern mushroom breeding. Together, these parent genetics produce a cultivar with a unique combination of strength, symmetry, and visual appeal.
Casper is celebrated for its striking appearance. Mature specimens commonly develop thick snow-white stems, broad ivory-colored caps, and dense, sculptural fruiting bodies with very little visible pigmentation. As the tissue is handled, vivid cobalt-blue bruising often develops against the pale surface, creating the ghostly contrast that inspired the variety’s name. Depending on the individual isolate, cap shape and overall proportions may vary slightly, but Casper consistently expresses the bold, refined morphology that has made it instantly recognizable.
Since its release, Casper has earned a strong reputation among collectors and breeders alike. Its dependable morphology and premium lineage have made it a valuable addition to modern genetics libraries, and it continues to be refined through ongoing selection. The variety represents another example of how thoughtful hybridization and careful stabilization can produce distinctive new expressions.
