B+, also known as B Positive, is one of the most iconic and enduring varieties. For more than three decades, it has remained a staple within the mycology community, earning widespread recognition for its classic morphology, rich history, and lasting influence on cultivated mushroom genetics. Even as countless modern designer varieties have emerged, B+ continues to be regarded as one of the foundational cubensis lineages.

The exact history of B+ has never been fully documented, but the variety is most commonly credited to the Florida mycologist known as Mr. G, who introduced the genetic through early spore trading networks during the early 1990s. As internet communities dedicated to mycology began to grow, B+ quickly gained popularity and became one of the first named varieties to be widely distributed among collectors and researchers. Although several origin stories exist, Mr. G’s contribution remains the account most frequently recognized within the community.

B+ is admired for its timeless appearance and classic features. Mature specimens typically develop broad golden to caramel-colored caps, sturdy white stems, and the characteristic dark purple-brown spores associated with the species. As the mushrooms mature, the caps gradually flatten while the stems commonly exhibit deep blue bruising when handled, creating the familiar characteristics that have made B+ instantly recognizable for decades.

Beyond its appearance, B+ has played an important role in the preservation and distribution of cultivated mushroom genetics. Its widespread availability and dependable characteristics have allowed it to remain in circulation through generations of collectors, breeders, and microscopy enthusiasts.
