Description

Black Cap Ochraceocentrata is a recently described mushroom species native to southern Africa and is currently recognized as the closest known wild relative of P.c. The species is recognized by several distinctive morphological characteristics, including its subdecurrent gills, robust growth habit, and uniquely shaped caps. Many cultivated genetics also develop beautiful olive-green to dark, nearly black cap coloration as they mature, making them especially striking in appearance, although this coloration can vary between isolates.

The discovery of P. ochraceocentrata has significantly advanced scientists’ understanding of the evolutionary history of African species. As additional genetic studies continue, many collections once labeled as P. natalensis are being reclassified under the newly recognized species, providing greater taxonomic accuracy for researchers and collectors alike.
