Description

Melmac, sometimes spelled Melmak, is one of the most celebrated and historically important varieties within the legendary Penis Envy lineage. Frequently referred to as Homestead Penis Envy, the variety traces its origins to the Homestead Book Company, one of the earliest commercial distributors of mushroom genetics during the 1980s. Many historians of the mycology community consider Melmac to be one of the first stabilized Penis Envy selections to become widely available. The name “Melmac” is widely believed to have been inspired by the fictional home planet of the television character ALF, a nod to the era in which the variety first gained recognition.

Melmac has become famous for its unmistakable appearance. It consistently produces thick, meaty stems with a rugged, textured surface and broad caps that range from rich caramel to golden brown. As the mushrooms mature, the caps often expand more fully than those of traditional Penis Envy varieties, frequently developing gently upturned edges that give them a distinctive saucer-like profile. Deep blue bruising commonly appears where the tissue is handled, creating a striking contrast against the pale stems and warm cap coloration.

Over the years, Melmac has become one of the most influential parent genetics in modern mushroom breeding. Its bold structure, reliable morphology, and unique physical characteristics have made it a favorite among breeders developing new designer cultivars. Numerous well-known modern varieties trace part of their lineage back to Melmac, reflecting its lasting influence on the evolution of contemporary genetics.

Melmac’s story is closely connected to the broader history of the Penis Envy family. While some details surrounding the earliest development of the lineage continue to be discussed within the mycology community, Melmac is widely recognized as one of the earliest preserved and stabilized Penis Envy selections. Its continued circulation over several decades has helped maintain an important piece of mushroom breeding history while providing the foundation for many of today’s most respected designer genetics.
